My Mission: Where I’m going
A Man on a Mission
I was reflecting on my journey so far and the road I have ahead of me, when the phrase “Rogue Rapper” popped into my head. I felt stuck between two worlds, with goals, traits, and beliefs that wouldn’t let me settle comfortably into either. My choices were either to sacrifice part of myself to keep things simple or try to awkwardly figure out how to do something different. Maybe we don’t have to be either innocent and helpless or powerful and corrupt. Maybe we don’t have to be a conservative or liberal, insecure or arrogant. The saying goes, “pick your poison”, but what if there’s another option available. What if we don’t have to sign our lives over to a category? We could do something different entirely; it would be awkward, hard and messy but worth it. What would it be something distinctly different in an age of fronts and polarization? We all feel all this pressure to fall in line, and I had had enough. I decided that I couldn’t fight for team A or B. I went rogue.
My Story: Where I Came From
A Story Steeped in Sound
It all began when I was 11. I was given a gift card and spent it on a Newsboys CD that changed my life. After downloading it onto an iPod that was also given to me, I would sit in his room and play that album over and over again. This love of music would soon have me learning to play guitar and creating my own songs. Freshman year, I started playing football and fell in love with hip-hop. This also started a dark period of my life where I would lean on music heavily to get through. I am now 19 and have been rapping for 6 years, determined to make a music career happen. I continue to teach myself everything I can about making music and the music industry. I am even moved in with my Grandma, and enrolled at the University of South Carolina Aiken majoring in marketing.
